Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Glasgow

The implementation of the 1999 Immigration and Asylum Act has led to major changes to the way asylum seekers are resettled in the UK. A nationally co-ordinated resettlement and support system was established in April 2000, involving dispersal to a number of key cluster areas in the country. As a result of this new policy, Glasgow has for the first time received significant numbers of asylum seekers. Historically, the voluntary sector has played a major role in providing support services for asylum seekers and refugees in the UK, and a key aspect of the new policy has been to facilitate the role of the voluntary sector in supporting asylum seekers in new dispersal areas. In Glasgow multi-agency partnerships have been established to co-ordinate local responses to the needs of asylum seekers and to create a structure for the involvement of the voluntary sector in this process. These networks facilitate joint working across the statutory and voluntary sectors while also encouraging community involvement.
