Measuring Deprivation in Scotland
The SCRSJ was commissioned by the then Scottish Executive to produce a long-term strategy for measuring deprivation in Scotland in December 2002. A report setting out the research team's final recommendations was submitted to the Scottish Executive in July 2003.
The report provides a clear definition and conceptual basis for measuring deprivation. It sets out a long-term strategy for measuring area deprivation, and it explores approaches to measuring deprivation for individuals and for different social groups.
The report makes a number of specific recommendations: for revising and updating the area-based index of deprivation; and for developing new measures of deprivation at the individual level.
The Scottish Executive welcomed the final report and accepted all the recommendations in principle. Both the report and the Executive's formal responses to it are available from the Scottish Executive's website.
