Older people, environment and wellbeing
This project explored older people's understanding and experience of their local environment, with an emphasis on how it affects their health and well-being. Environmental equity studies have shown that the physical environment tends to be worse in areas of higher deprivation, but we know less about how different people experience such inequality and what is important to them in their local environment. Older people are a particularly interesting group in this respect as they are often more vulnerable to environmental problems such as pollution and poor maintenance.
The project took an ethnographic, qualitative approach to explore these issues with older people in areas of different physical characteristics and different levels of deprivation, in the Glasgow / Strathclyde area.
