Review of Social Exclusion in Rural Areas
Mark Shucksmith was commissioned by DEFRA to review research into Social Exclusion in Rural Areas. The aim was to help those engaged in the review of the Rural White Paper for England to develop a clear and shared understanding of what research (qualitative and quantitative) exists; what are the key policy lessons; which key areas have evidence gaps; and what further research is needed to address these gaps.
The review considered various research perspectives on social exclusion and reviewed topics including incomes and poverty; employment and labour market integration; welfare entitlements; affordable housing; participation, exclusion and governance; and social exclusion through the life course.
Alun Michael MP, Minister for Rural Affairs in England, cited this review when launching a new scheme to help pensioners in poverty in rural areas in March 2004.
